2021 Canterbury Spring Meeting
On November 13 & 14 the Malvern Rifle Club hosted the Canterbury Rifle Association’s Canterbury Spring Championship.
Forecast wet weather and Covid may have reduced the number’s attending but did not diminish the quality of competitors or competition.
Day 1
At the conclusion of the Range Briefing on Saturday 13, shooters stood with caps off the acknowledge the late Gavin King who had been a member of the Malvern Rifle Club.
Wet weather threatened at the start of the weekend’s seven ranges of shooting. The programme was for 10 counting shots at 300, 800, 900 & 900 yards on Saturday and 500, 600 & 600 yards on Sunday.
The rain arrived midway through the shooting at 300 yards getting more and more intense. A decision was made to move straight to the 900 yard shooting position where shelter could be erected to provide cover for the shooters for health and safety reasons. Shooting at 800 yards was abandoned and 3 rounds were shot at 900 yards.
The rain eased for the final round of shooting at 900 yards but was replaced by a tricky wind that varied in strength, angle and direction.
At the end of the first day’s competition Malvern’s Allan White had not dropped a point shooting an outstanding 200/200 with26 centres in Target Rifle A grade leading Andre du Toit (Malvern) and Martin Fleming (Ashburton) both on 195 with 20 centres.
Malvern’s Sam Kershaw lead Blenheim-Kaituna’s Clinton Whyte by 192.16 to 186.12 in TR B Grade. In C Grade Ashburton’s Gareth Miller lead his club mate John Fleming by 191.16 to 186.12.
In FTR Ashburton’s Coby Snowden lead Malvern’s Mark Alexander 223.7 to 222.8. In F-Open Ashburton’s Mike Chui lead his club mate Murray Cook by 236.20 to 232.12.
Day 2
The weather was overcast at the start of shooting on Sunday. The occasional skiff of drizzle showed rain was still possible. The decision was made to shoot all three ranges at 600 yards because of boggy ground around the 500 yard shooting position.
After the first two rounds of shooting the 3 tops scorers in TR A-Grade, FTR and F-Open were identified. In their respective grades these shooters would shoot at the same time, shoulder to shoulder to determine the Champions for the Championship.
Allan White finished with a superb 349/350 for the weekend, dropping one point in the final round of competition.
The Malvern Rifle Club won the inter-club teams championship from the Ashburton & Districts Rifle Club.
The Canterbury Spring Champions for 2021 are Allan White, Mark Alexander, and Mike Chui.
